How to Transfer files from Mac to iPhone over WiFi

With OS X Yosemite, Apple has launched a new feature called Airdrop which enables you to transfer and receive files wirelessly between any compatible Mac and iOS devices. 

Thanks to this feature, file sharing has become much easier and now you don’t have to rely upon third party apps to transfer files between a Mac and other iOS devices. As the Airdrop feature makes use of WiFi to transfer files, the files transfer are blazing fast and get completed within moments. The best thing about this feature is you don’t need to be connected to the same WiFi network. 

Here’s how you can use the Airdrop feature on Mac OS X Yosemite and above versions to transfer files wirelessly to any iOS device running iOS 7 or above versions.

How to Enable Airdrop on Mac and iPhone.

Before you proceed ahead, you need to know that the Airdrop feature will require OS X or versions for Mac and iOS 7 or higher version for iOS devices. If your Mac and iPhone adheres to the requirements mentioned, you can follow the guide provided below.

Here are a few things you need to take care of, before you proceed ahead.

  • Turn on WiFi on your Mac.
  • Swipe from the bottom to top on your iPhone’s screen to bring up the Control center. Turn on WiFi and Bluetooth on your iPhone or any other iOS device running iOS 7 and above versions. Then tap on the Airdrop option and select Everyone.

  • Move your devices closer together. AirDrop is designed to work within a range of approximately 30 feet (9 meters).

How to Transfer files from a Mac to iPhone over WiFi

  • Step 1: Open Finder and select Airdrop from under the Favorite menu. And make sure the Allow me to be discovered option is set to Everyone.

  • Step 3: Wait for a few seconds for your phone to appear in Airdrop. Once your iPhone appears, drag and drop any file on your iPhone’s image to send the file to your phone.

  • Step 3: You should then receive a request notification on your iPhone. Accept it to start the file transfer.

  • Step 4: Once the file has been downloaded, it will automatically be opened in the app that handles the respective file format.

For files that are not supported via airdrop, you will be prompted to choose between a few apps to open the file. If you tap on cancel, the file will be deleted.

Where are the files received via airdrop stored on an iPhone?

  • Photos received via airdrop are stored in the photos app.
  • Ebooks received via airdrop are stored in the iBooks app.
  • Web Pages received via airdrop are stored inside the reading list in the safari app.

Unfortunately you cannot receive and store music or video files via airdrop.
